Intercom alternatives

12 tools that do a similar job, and what makes each one different.

What Intercom is

Intercom is a customer support platform built around a shared inbox, a help centre and an AI agent called Fin. Email, chat, phone, WhatsApp and social channels all feed into the same inbox, so an agent works a single queue rather than watching several tools. Seats are sold on three tiers. Essential, at $29 per seat per month, covers the Messenger, the shared inbox, ticketing, pre-built reports and a public help centre. Advanced, at $85, adds multiple team inboxes, workflow automation, round robin assignment and a private or multilingual help centre. Expert, at $132, adds single sign on and identity management, HIPAA support, SLAs and a multibrand Messenger and help centre. Advanced also bundles 20 Lite seats at no extra cost and Expert bundles 50. A Lite seat is limited to internal collaboration and cannot send outbound messages, so it suits engineers or account managers who need to read and comment on a conversation but will never reply to the customer. Fin, the AI agent, is charged at $0.99 per resolved outcome on every plan, so the bill follows the number of conversations it closes rather than headcount. It can also be bought on its own with no seat cost, subject to a minimum monthly commitment, which makes it possible to run the AI agent without buying support seats at all. Copilot is the assistant aimed at the agent rather than the customer. It answers from help centres, articles, URLs, PDFs, macros and connected tools such as Notion, Guru and Confluence, and costs $29 per agent per month on annual billing or $35 on monthly. Copilot and AI auto translation each include 10 free conversations per agent per month. A Proactive Support Plus add on costs $99 per month and covers 500 messages. More than 350 integrations are listed, among them Salesforce, Stripe and Jira. Customer data can be hosted in the United States, the European Union or Australia, and customers who opt out of fine tuning have that data deleted within 30 days. Intercom holds SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, ISO 27018, ISO 27701 and ISO 42001 certifications, and publishes a 99.8% uptime SLA covering both the AI agent and the core platform. Single sign on integrates with Okta, Azure AD and OneLogin, and two factor authentication, SCIM provisioning and IP restrictions are available.

Marketing, sales and support working from one contact record, which is the whole argument for it: no syncing between three systems that disagree. Email, landing pages, forms, pipelines, ticketing and reporting are included. The free CRM is real and widely used; costs climb steeply as contact counts and add-ons grow, and that is the thing to model before committing.

Freemium

A CRM that models your pipeline instead of making you adopt theirs. Objects, attributes and relationships are defined by you, and it builds from real data, email and calendar activity populate records rather than waiting for someone to log them. Aimed at startups and investment teams whose process does not fit a standard sales funnel.

Freemium

Deal-stage CRM a small sales team can run without an administrator. The pipeline view is the product: deals move through stages, activities are scheduled against them, and the reporting answers what is stuck and where. Deliberately simpler than the enterprise suites, which is exactly why teams choose it.

Paid

Prospect data and sequencing in the same place you send from, so research, list-building and outreach are not three tools. A large contact database with filters, verified emails, sequences, dialling and engagement tracking. Data accuracy varies by region and industry, worth testing on your own segment before committing.

Freemium

Event analytics for questions that begin with 'how many users who'. Funnels, retention curves, cohorts and flows are the core, built on events with properties rather than pageviews. Strong at behavioural questions and weaker at the simple traffic reporting a marketing team wants, which is why it often sits beside a web analytics tool.

Freemium

Behavioural analytics built around cohorts, retention and the paths users take through a product. Comparable to Mixpanel and generally chosen for the depth of its retention and journey analysis. Experimentation and customer data tooling sit alongside. Aimed at product teams with enough volume for the analysis to mean something.

Freemium

A broad suite covering keyword research, rank tracking, competitor analysis, site audits, backlinks, advertising research and social. The breadth is the selling point and the drawback: teams that use most of it get real value, and teams that want one job done well often find something narrower cheaper. Its competitor teardowns are the feature people cite most.

Freemium

Enterprise writing where a style guide is enforced rather than suggested. Terminology, tone and compliance rules are applied consistently across everyone who writes, and the platform can be grounded in a company's own knowledge. Bought by large organisations for governance and consistency; overkill for a small team and precisely the point for a regulated one.

Paid

Corrections and tone suggestions in essentially every text box: browser, desktop, mobile keyboard, Word, Google Docs. Beyond grammar it flags tone, clarity and wordiness, and business plans enforce a style guide across a team. The free tier catches most mistakes; the paid one is about rewriting rather than correcting.

Freemium

Marketing copy at volume, kept inside one brand's voice. Brand Voice learns from existing material, campaign tools generate a full set of assets from a brief, and templates cover the usual formats. Built for marketing teams producing a lot of copy under a consistent identity, which is a narrower job than a general assistant.

Paid

Autocomplete and chat inside the editor you already use (VS Code, JetBrains, Neovim, Visual Studio), plus review suggestions on pull requests. It is strongest at the code you would have written anyway: boilerplate, tests, the second half of an obvious function. Enterprise plans can index private repositories so suggestions match house conventions.

Paid

Payments, subscriptions, invoicing and payouts, with documentation good enough that people copy from it as a matter of habit. Handles cards, wallets, bank debits and local methods across most of the world, plus fraud tooling, tax calculation and a billing engine. The default choice for software businesses. You remain the merchant of record, which is the difference from Paddle or Lemon Squeezy.
