12 tools that do a similar job, and what makes each one different.

What Semrush is

Semrush is a subscription platform covering SEO, AI visibility, content, local listings, advertising and social. It is organised into nine solution areas: Semrush One, SEO, AI Visibility, Traffic and Market, Content, Local, Advertising, AI PR and Social. Named tools include the Keyword Magic Tool, Site Audit, rank tracking, Backlink Analytics and an AI visibility checker. Those tools read from indexes that Semrush builds itself: 28 billion keywords, 43 trillion backlinks and 808 million domain profiles, held across 142 geographic databases. Four plans are listed, and they differ in how many websites, keywords and AI prompts they cover. The SEO plan is $139 per month, or $117.33 a month on annual billing, and covers 5 websites and 500 tracked keywords. Starter is $199 per month, or $165.17 annually, and covers 5 websites, 500 tracked keywords and 50 tracked AI prompts. Pro+ is $299 per month, or $248.17 annually, and covers 15 websites, 1,500 tracked keywords and 100 tracked AI prompts. Advanced is $549 per month, or $455.67 annually, and covers 40 websites, 5,000 tracked keywords and 200 tracked AI prompts. Users beyond the first are charged separately, at $45 each on Starter, $80 on Pro+ and $100 on Advanced. The SEO Toolkit is sold in Pro, Guru and Business tiers. Pro tracks 500 keywords, audits 100,000 pages a month and returns 10,000 results per report. Guru tracks 1,500 keywords, audits 300,000 pages and returns 30,000 results. Business tracks 5,000 keywords, audits 1,000,000 pages and returns 50,000 results. A single audit is capped at 20,000 pages on Pro and Guru, and at 100,000 pages on Business. Additional users on toolkits other than SEO cost $20 each regardless of tier. Without an SEO Toolkit subscription, Site Audit crawls only 100 pages a month and 100 pages per audit. Unused crawl budget does not carry over between months, and the allowance resets on the first day of each month. A seven day free trial is available.

A desktop crawler that walks a site the way a search engine would and reports what it finds: broken links, redirect chains, duplicate titles, missing canonicals, orphaned pages. Connects to Google Analytics, Search Console and PageSpeed to enrich the crawl. Free up to 500 URLs. It is a technical tool with a technical interface, and it finds what tidier audit tools omit.

Freemium

The backlink index that most SEO arguments end up being settled with, alongside keyword research, rank tracking, site auditing and content exploration. The crawler is among the largest outside the search engines, which is why its link data is treated as a reference point. Expensive, with no free tier of consequence, and priced as a professional tool.

Paid

Technical SEO auditing that explains why each issue matters and what to do about it, rather than emitting a list of flags and leaving prioritisation to you. Crawls render JavaScript, and reports are readable enough to hand to a client. The educational framing is the differentiator; it is often run alongside a raw crawler rather than instead of one.

Paid

Builds content briefs and scores drafts against what already ranks for a term, headings, length, entities and related terms drawn from the current top results. Useful as a check on a writer's instincts and dangerous as a substitute for them: optimising to a score produces text that reads like it was optimised to a score.

Paid

Event analytics for questions that begin with 'how many users who'. Funnels, retention curves, cohorts and flows are the core, built on events with properties rather than pageviews. Strong at behavioural questions and weaker at the simple traffic reporting a marketing team wants, which is why it often sits beside a web analytics tool.

Freemium

Behavioural analytics built around cohorts, retention and the paths users take through a product. Comparable to Mixpanel and generally chosen for the depth of its retention and journey analysis. Experimentation and customer data tooling sit alongside. Aimed at product teams with enough volume for the analysis to mean something.

Freemium

Corrections and tone suggestions in essentially every text box: browser, desktop, mobile keyboard, Word, Google Docs. Beyond grammar it flags tone, clarity and wordiness, and business plans enforce a style guide across a team. The free tier catches most mistakes; the paid one is about rewriting rather than correcting.

Freemium

Marketing, sales and support working from one contact record, which is the whole argument for it: no syncing between three systems that disagree. Email, landing pages, forms, pipelines, ticketing and reporting are included. The free CRM is real and widely used; costs climb steeply as contact counts and add-ons grow, and that is the thing to model before committing.

Freemium

The ecosystem around Lottie, the format that ships vector animation as JSON. Animations stay sharp at any size, weigh a fraction of a GIF or video, and can be recoloured or controlled at runtime. The platform hosts a large library, converts from After Effects, and provides players for web and mobile.

Freemium

A terminal that treats each command and its output as a block you can navigate, copy and share, rather than an endless scroll. Input behaves like a text editor, history is searchable, and an assistant can read a failing command and suggest the fix. Workflows save parameterised commands for a team. Some of it requires an account, which is the objection people raise most.

Freemium

Generates mobile and web apps from a table your team already maintains. Rows become screens, columns become fields, and the result is installable and works offline. Best for internal tools (inventory, inspections, field data, directories), where the alternative is a spreadsheet somebody edits on a phone.

Freemium

Daily product launches with a badge and a backlink, run transparently, the ranking rules and the code are public, which is unusual in this category. Free and premium submission paths, with the paid one skipping the queue. Positioned as an open alternative to the closed boards, and worth watching for that reason as much as the traffic.
