Hemingway Editor alternatives

12 tools that do a similar job, and what makes each one different.

What Hemingway Editor is

Hemingway Editor is a writing tool that marks up a draft for readability. Text is highlighted in five colours: red for a sentence far more complex than the chosen target score, yellow for one that is hard to read but less severe, purple for a word that has a simpler exact synonym, blue for adverbs, passive voice and qualifiers, and green for a grammar, spelling or punctuation problem. Green requires a Plus subscription; the other four do not. The target score is adjustable rather than fixed. The default is grade 9, and paying users can switch between three presets named Accessible, Default and Technical, which changes what counts as too complex rather than changing the text itself. An expanded statistics panel reports letters, characters, words, sentences, paragraphs and reading time. The free web editor applies no word count limit to a document, and the free grammar checker can be used without creating an account. That checker flags context sensitive word choice, run on sentences, tense shifts between sentences, missing commas and wrong word usage. Three other free tools sit beside it: a paraphrasing tool, an AI proofreader and a readability checker. Hemingway Editor Plus costs $10 per month on monthly billing, or $100 per year, which the vendor equates to $8.33 a month. Grammar fixes are uncapped for paying users, and on a team plan each user receives 10,000 AI sentences per month. The free trial runs for two weeks and does not ask for a credit card, and no charge is applied when it ends unless you pick a paid plan and enter payment details. The desktop application is sold on different terms. Hemingway Editor 3 costs $19.99 as a single purchase rather than a subscription, runs on macOS and Windows, and works fully offline with no internet connection required. It exports to plain text, PDF, Word .docx, HTML and Markdown, and publishes to WordPress in a single click. The trade-off is that it excludes the AI features found in the subscription product, so the two are companions rather than the same tool at two prices.

Go-to-market copy and the workflows around producing it at scale: sales sequences, campaign content and research runs across a whole account list rather than one asset at a time. Positioned for revenue teams rather than individual writers, which shows in the workflow tooling more than the generation itself.

Freemium

Corrections and tone suggestions in essentially every text box: browser, desktop, mobile keyboard, Word, Google Docs. Beyond grammar it flags tone, clarity and wordiness, and business plans enforce a style guide across a team. The free tier catches most mistakes; the paid one is about rewriting rather than correcting.

Freemium

Enterprise writing where a style guide is enforced rather than suggested. Terminology, tone and compliance rules are applied consistently across everyone who writes, and the platform can be grounded in a company's own knowledge. Bought by large organisations for governance and consistency; overkill for a small team and precisely the point for a regulated one.

Paid

Marketing copy at volume, kept inside one brand's voice. Brand Voice learns from existing material, campaign tools generate a full set of assets from a brief, and templates cover the usual formats. Built for marketing teams producing a lot of copy under a consistent identity, which is a narrower job than a general assistant.

Paid

The ecosystem around Lottie, the format that ships vector animation as JSON. Animations stay sharp at any size, weigh a fraction of a GIF or video, and can be recoloured or controlled at runtime. The platform hosts a large library, converts from After Effects, and provides players for web and mobile.

Freemium

A terminal that treats each command and its output as a block you can navigate, copy and share, rather than an endless scroll. Input behaves like a text editor, history is searchable, and an assistant can read a failing command and suggest the fix. Workflows save parameterised commands for a team. Some of it requires an account, which is the objection people raise most.

Freemium

Generates mobile and web apps from a table your team already maintains. Rows become screens, columns become fields, and the result is installable and works offline. Best for internal tools (inventory, inspections, field data, directories), where the alternative is a spreadsheet somebody edits on a phone.

Freemium

Daily product launches with a badge and a backlink, run transparently, the ranking rules and the code are public, which is unusual in this category. Free and premium submission paths, with the paid one skipping the queue. Positioned as an open alternative to the closed boards, and worth watching for that reason as much as the traffic.

Freemium

Full web applications without writing code: a database, workflow logic, an editor for the interface, and a plugin ecosystem for the rest. Genuinely capable (real businesses run on it), and it is a platform commitment rather than a prototype tool. Performance and cost at scale are the recurring criticisms.

Freemium

VS Code rebuilt around a model that can see the whole repository. Beyond autocomplete it edits across files from an instruction, answers questions about unfamiliar code, and applies a diff you review before it lands. Keybindings and extensions carry over from VS Code, so switching costs an afternoon. The multi-file edit is the feature people stay for.

Freemium

Event analytics for questions that begin with 'how many users who'. Funnels, retention curves, cohorts and flows are the core, built on events with properties rather than pageviews. Strong at behavioural questions and weaker at the simple traffic reporting a marketing team wants, which is why it often sits beside a web analytics tool.

Freemium

Deploys a frontend by pushing to a branch, with a preview URL for every pull request, the workflow most React teams now expect by default. Built by the maintainers of Next.js, which it supports first and best. Edge functions, analytics and image optimisation are included. Costs are predictable until traffic is not, and bandwidth is the line to watch.
