Design tools with a real free tier

Free plans you can do actual work on, rather than a trial wearing a free plan's clothes.

Most free plans are trials that have stopped counting down. They give you the software and then withhold the one thing that makes it useful: export, or collaboration, or the right to use the output commercially. A free tier worth the name lets you finish and ship real work without paying, and accepts that some people never will. The tools here qualify, though they draw the line in different places. Some cap the number of files or projects, which is generous for a freelancer and useless for a studio. Some watermark exports, which is fine for a mockup and not for a client deliverable. Some restrict the file formats you can get your work out in, which is the limit to check first, because it determines whether leaving later costs you anything. Three questions separate a usable free plan from a demonstration. Can you export at the resolution and format your work needs to ship in. Can somebody else open the file and comment on it. Are you permitted to sell what you made. Any vendor answering no to the third has built a portfolio tool rather than a design tool, whatever the marketing page says. Read what a free plan withholds rather than what it includes: the second list is marketing and the first one is the product.
